More troop 1 portsmouth history...
Troop 1 Portsmouth has been in existence since 1930. Troop 1 has a roster of 60 Boy Scouts and 30 adults. While the majority of Troop 1 scouts live in Portsmoutn, a number of them live in the neighboring communities of Newport, Middletown, Naval Station Newport and Tiverton. Because of it's long existence in Portsmouth, Troop 1 has had second and third generation Boy Scouts whose fathers and grandfathers were members of our troop. Troop 1 has always had a strong military connection with the servicemen and women and their families who are temporarily stationed in the area.
The Boy Scouts of America grants charters to organizations such a s churches, service clubs, and other community groups to operate scout groups. The Chartered Organization for Troop 1 Portsmouth is the Portsmouth Multi-Purpose Senior Center located on Bristol Ferry Road in Portsmouth. The Senior Center provides the meeting place and storage space for Troop 1. It also provides volunteer adults to help guide the troop, many of whom were Boy Scouts in their youth. Map of Senior Center.
Boy Scouts is a boy-led, boy-run organization, but the boys must be trained to be leaders. One of the most important responsibilities of the Troop's adult leaders is to provide the direction, coaching, and training that empowers the boy with the skills he will need to lead his troop. To that end, Troop 1 Portsmouth has a strong commitment to Youth Leadership Training as well as Adult Leadership Training to ensure that the troop's scout program is fun, effective, productive and safe for the scouts.
Troop 1 Portsmouth is also very committed to the advancement of each scout. While not ALL Boy Scouts become Eagle Scouts- the highest rank in scouting- Troop 1 leadership encourages each boy to strive for his maximum potential in scouting with the ultimate goal of achieving Eagle Scout. Troop 1 Portsmouth has had the honor and pleasure of participating in the advancement of 35 scouts to the rank of Eagle Scout in the last seven years!
troop 1 portsmouth accomplishments
Troop 1 Portsmouth's first and foremost accomplishment is the continual fulfillment of the Boy Scouts of America's Mission Statement for each and every scout in the troop. One of the methods used to help meet that mission is Community Service. Community service for Troop 1 Portsmouth is accomplished in two primary ways: Troop activities and Eagle Scout projects.
troop 1 portsmouth activities
Two traditional activities for Troop 1 are the annual Scouting for Food Drive in early November and participation in the Portsmouth Multi-Purpose Senior Center's Annual Lawn Festival, in August.
For the annual food drive, the troop delivers collection bags to homes in Portsmouth and collects those bags full of donated food a week later. The troop assists with the boxing up of the food at the Portsmouth Fire Station and loading the food onto the Rhode Island National Guard trucks for delivery to the R.I. Food Bank.
Eagle scout projects
In order to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, a scout must plan, organize, and manage a community project with the volunteer labor and donated goods and services. While most of the labor for these projects come from Troop 1 Portsmouth scouts and adults, the organizations benefiting from the Eagle Scout projects often provide volunteer labor as well. The projects conducted by Eagle Scout candidates from Troop 1 Portsmouth tend to be focused on the Portsmouth and Aquidneck Island community.
